The Blue City, in Every Shade

By Aaliyah May 4, 2026 1 min read

Chefchaouen does not photograph the way it feels. Photos flatten it into a single, postcard blue. In person it’s a hundred blues — cobalt in the shade, powder in the sun, a deep almost-violet where the paint has worn thin and the wall beneath shows through.

Lost on purpose

The medina is a knot of staircases that double back on themselves, and the only sensible strategy is to surrender. I spent an afternoon following whichever alley looked bluest, and the city rewarded me for it: a courtyard of cats asleep in the warm light, a doorway framed in painted flowerpots, an old man weaving who waved me in to watch.

Why blue?

Everyone offers a different reason for the color — to repel mosquitoes, to mimic the sky, a tradition brought by those who settled here long ago. I asked four people and got four answers, and I’ve decided that the disagreement is the most honest answer of all. A place this beautiful is allowed to keep a few secrets.

cobalt, sky, sea, and everything between.
